Research Projects in Mautern-Favianis (Lower Austria)

The analysis of the Norican Danube limes in Austria has experienced numerous new impulses in recent years. The older research at the Roman fort and vicus of Mautern-Favianis, the more recent excavations (1996-2006), and the archaeological ordnance survey of the State Monument Commission in Lower Austria, as well as the contextual analysis of features and finds and analysis of objects of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, represent a point of departure for supra-regional investigations of the central Norican Danube limes and in the hinterland. The results of the FWF-Projects “Research at the Fort of Mautern-Favianis” and “The eastern Fort/Vicus of Mautern-Favianis” (D3414, P-13689-G03 and D3772-G02) have granted for the first time an insight into the building sequence and material culture of a Norican auxiliary fort and its Vicus, from its inception until its abandonment in late antiquity.
