Department for Central European Archaeology (CEA) at the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Vienna
This is the homepage of the Research Group for Landscape Archaeology at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (Department for Central European Archaeology (CEA))< in Vienna. Current and already completed projects concerning a wide variety of questions related to the northern provinces of the Roman empire and the Mediterranean region will be presented here. Discussion of methodologies and the implementation of modern methods in field research constitute an important focal point. The Research Group carries out independently all of the work presented on this homepage, from survey work, geophysics, and excavation up to analysis of finds, data analysis in GIS, scientific evaluation, production of manuscripts and the layout of publications.
A focal point of research is the Regional Archaeology project “Rural Settlement in the Hinterland of Mautern-Favianis” in Lower Austria (Austria), from 2007-2010. This project is financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF-Projekt P19227-G02) and is carried out at the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Vienna. The project in 2007-2010 builds on the excavations and research of the Austrian Archaeological Institute during the years 1996-2004 at the Fort and Vicus of Mautern. The goal of the project is the clarification of the rural settlement structures of the imperial period in the hinterland of Mautern-Favianis, along the middle section of the Austrian Danube limes.
