This is the homepage of the Department of Central European Archaeology (ZEA) at the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Vienna. Current and already completed projects concerning a wide variety of questions related to the northern provinces of the Roman empire and the Mediterranean region will be presented here.
The Department of Central European Archaeology (ZEA) is dedicated to the study of Central European cultural area from the late Iron Age to the Roman times and the early Middle Ages. The main research interests are in the Roman era. The individual research projects include long-term on one arechaeological site based excavation projects, and other individual projects with regional issues in the Austrian provinces (Burgenland, Lower Austria and Styria) and in the neighboring countries (the Slovak Republic, Hungary, Slovenia).
The tasks of the Department include the planning and implementation of field projects (surveys, excavations, geophysical prospecting), contextual processing and analysis of find materials and the historical interpretation, publication and presentation of research results. The printing of the monographic publications are in the series "Central European Archaeology (ZEA)" at the Austrian Archaeological Institute.
