The restoration and protection of buildings from the Aydınoğulları period is to be understood as a contribution to the protection of the Turkish cultural heritage. Accordingly, in 2009 the documentation of the Türbe, a tomb building situated near the state hospital in Selçuk, was begun: after an exact recording of the building was made, a restoration proposal was presented to the Turkish monument authorities which was accepted in 2010 with the condition that archaeological investigations should be carried out beforehand. This work was completed in autumn, 2010.
The building shows evidence of severe deterioration due to improper restoration measures in the past and inadequate maintenance. The use of cement during stabilisation work in the past has led to the release of salts, while vegetation growth and dampness infiltrating through groundwater have caused additional damage. After the scientific work, a drainage system for the building should be worked out in order to reduce the dampness; furthermore, the dome should be covered by a tiled roof. The remaining consolidation measures are limited to a strengthening and partial closure of the masonry work as well as the removal of modern additions. The goal of the project is, by means of a careful and cautious approach, to make the history of construction and usage legible and to present this building, which is so prominent in the urban framework of Selçuk, to local residents and to tourists.
