Notes for Contributors

Publications of the OeAI are the series »Sonderschriften des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts« (SoSchrÖAI) and »Ergänzungshefte zu den Jahresheften des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes« (ErghÖJh), »Zentraleuropäische Archäologie« (ZEA), »Forschungen in Limyra« (FiLim) as well as the refereed journal »Jahreshefte des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes in Wien« (ÖJh), of which volumes 69 (2000) – 78 (2009) appeared in collaboration with the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Starting with volume 79 (2010) the ÖJh will be published in the Press of the OeAI itself and can be acquired from the Phoibos-Press. Joint publications with Austrian Academy of Sciences also include the »Forschungen in Ephesos« (FiE), the »Untersuchungen der Zweigstelle Kairo des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts« (ÖAIKairo) as well as the journal »Ägypten und Levante« (AegLev). The series »Berichte und Materialien des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts« (BerMatÖAI) has been discontinued, and certain individual publications are only published in exceptional cases.

In order to facilitate the preparation of manuscripts for authors in the German-speaking regions, for the creation of footnote apparatus the OeAI traditionally follows the current guidelines of the German Archaeological Institute. We therefore ask you to consult these, and we request that you conform your manuscripts to the guidelines contained therein. For works with place of publication in Austria, furthermore, the list of abbrevations / Sigelliste is also valid.

Data Storage Device

Please submit data storage in a common word processing programme.

For passages of Greek text, or other diacritical marks which go beyond the scope of Microsoft, please use the script AISA UNICODE, which is made available by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Form of the Manuscript

Text, picture captions, and picture credits are to be saved in their own individual files. Text and footnotes should be created in a uniform font size (12 point) and in 1.5 line spacing, with the footnotes numbered continuously and appearing at the bottom of each page.

Please avoid additional formatting such as justified text, hyphenation, headers and footers, tab stops, or indentations. Please only use paragraph breaks when new paragraphs are actually desired. Headings, captions or titles should be used so that their significance is clear.

Please submit two final copies (in A4 format) of all files and provide, at the end of the submission, your name, address, and e-mail address, as you would like them to appear in print.

Authors are solely responsible for obtaining necessary copyright permission; they are also responsible for the content of their article and the accuracy of citations.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted must be at least 300 dpi resolution for photographs (colour and greyscale) or 800–1,200 dpi for scanned line art (black or white); saved as TIFF. For scanned line art with fine lines (e.g. ceramic drawings) grey lines should be avoided; for better print quality, it is recommended that scans are at 800–1,200 dpi, and black instead of grey areas are integrated.

Graphics (e.g. ceramic charts, CAD-plans, etc.), created in Macromedia Freehand, Illustrator, Corel Draw or CAD-Programmes, must be saved in .eps format. Line width may not be less than 0.3 pt; the preferred font is Arial. In the case of incorporated photographs, the linked original files must be submitted separately, without exception.

Plans must not be larger than DIN A3 (420 × 297 mm). Overly large plans as well as coloured plans are to be avoided; if they are necessary in order to convey scientific information, contributors are requested to contact the editors.

Please be aware that the editors cannot undertake amendments or adaptations to graphics, and details might be lost in the case of extreme reductions in scale. Submitted illustrations of insufficient quality cannot be accepted for printing; please therefore send only original materials. For all digitalised illustrations, please also submit in all cases a hard-copy print out.

Copyright authorisation for illustrations must be procured in all cases by the author.

Copy deadline

ÖJh

Since volume 69 (2000), the “Jahreshefte des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes in Wien” has appeared as a refereed journal. With Volume 78 (2009) the peer review process was standardised with the creation of a Scientific Board. The international colleagues who have generously agreed to serve for a period of five years as scientific advisors not only take over the peer review of submitted articles, but they may also propose additional referees, present articles from their area of specialty, and are furthermore invited to contribute to the overall concept of the journal. For their engagement, the editors would like to thank

  • Necmi Karul (Istanbul)
  • Stefanie Martin-Kilcher (Bern)
  • Marion Meyer (Vienna)
  • Felix Pirson (Istanbul)
  • Susan I. Rotroff (St. Louis, MO)
  • R. R. R. Smith (Oxford)
  • Lutgarde Vandeput (Ankara).

All submitted articles are subject to the peer review process. An exception is constituted – as was also the case in the past – by reports covering excavations and surveys. These are assessed by the editorial board.

Articles for publication in the ÖJh may be submitted in German, English, French, and Italian. For articles in French and Italian, an abstract in English of not more than 200 words is required.

FiE

A Scientific Board was also constituted for the series »Forschungen in Ephesos«. The editors would like to thank the following for their cooperation:

  • Francesco D’Andria (Lecce)
  • Franz Alto Bauer (Munich)
  • Orhan Bingöl (Ankara)
  • Winfried Held (Marburg)
  • Antoine Hermary (Aix-en-Provence)
  • Necmi Karul (Istanbul)
  • Jeroen Poblome (Leuven)
  • Wulf Raeck (Frankfurt am Main)
  • Karl Reber (Lausanne)
  • Brian C. Rose (Philadelphia)
  • Ulrike Wulf-Rheidt (Berlin).

ZEA

The following individuals have generously offered their support as Scientific Advisors to the series »Zentraleuropaische Forschungen«

  • Christa Ebnöther (Bern)
  • Christof Flügel (Munich)
  • Denés Gabler (Budapest)
  • Jana Horvat (Ljubljana)
