Projects: Geographical Overview

The Library of the Athens Branch

Corresponding to the research areas of the branch office, the emphasis of the collection in the library of the OeAI in Athens lies in the areas of the archaeology, topography and cultural history of Greece from the early period until Late Antiquity. In addition, the library possesses publications on the archaeology of the broader Mediterranean region and of Austria, on methods and history of archaeology, as well as on Byzantine Studies and the cultural history of Greece in the modern era. In October 2010, the inventory comprised ca. 16,700 volumes with an annual increase of ca. 400 volumes (monographs and journals). Worthy of mention is the old inventory of volumes which appeared before 1916, amongst them books which originate from the Secretariat in Constantinople (Istanbul) which was abandoned in 1900.

The library of the OeAI Athens is a member of the Austrian Association of Libraries. Since October 2008, new additions are recorded by means of ALEPH, while parallel to this the old inventory is being entered into the online catalogue of the Austrian Association of Libraries (Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund) by means of retro-cataloguing.

The library is a pure reference library and may be used after inquiring about the opening times of the Institute; for guests of the institute it is accessible around the clock. Photocopies or scans can be prepared in limited numbers.
