Epigraphy in Ephesos

Stone inscriptions

During the excavations at Ephesos, approximately 6,000 inscriptions have been found; Ephesos therefore counts amongst the ancient sites with the highest number of inscriptions. A preliminary collection of the inscriptions is contained in Volumes 11–17 of the series »Inschriften griechischer Städte Kleinasiens«, and new finds are continually edited in the »Jahreshefte des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes in Wien« (ÖJh) as well as in the volumes of the »Forschungen in Ephesos«. The inscribed blocks themselves are in part displayed at the excavation site, in part stored in the subvaults of the Temple of Domitian; some of them have also been transported to the Efes Müzesi Selçuk. Squeezes of most of the inscriptions are kept in Vienna.

Graffiti from the Terrace Houses of Ephesos

The walls of the luxuriously appointed residences in the Terrace Houses of Ephesos were to a great extent covered with frescoes, upon which more than 600 graffiti (scratched inscriptions and drawings) are preserved. Their content ranges from simple writing exercises to epigrams which praise rich benefactors; from mere first names to receipts from tradesmen; and from commemorative inscriptions for friends to erotic anagrams. The publication of these inscriptions is included within the framework of the publication of the individual residential units.

In the course of restoration work in the ›Marble Hall‹ in Residential Unit 6 of Terrace House 2, some fragments of the marble wall revetment carried inscriptions. On the one hand, these permit interesting insights into the technical aspects of processing and applying the marble, while on the other hand they allow a precise chronological organisation: one date, derived from the imperial quarries and indicating the third consular year of Hadrian (119 A.D.), shows that the room decoration is to be placed in the early years of the reign of that emperor.
