The Department of Studies of Central European Archaeology (ZEA) is dedicated to the investigation of the Central European cultural region from the prehistoric Late Iron Age, through the Roman period, up to the early Middle Ages. The focal point of the research lies in the Roman era. The individual research projects encompass, on the one hand, long-term excavation projects tied to a particular site, and on the other hand individual projects with supra-regional questions in the Austrian federal states (Burgenland, Lower Austria and Styria) and in the bordering neighbouring countries (Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia).
The tasks of the area of studies extend from the planning and implementation of field projects (surveys, excavations, geophysical prospection), the contextual processing and analysis of find materials and their historical interpretation, up to the publication and presentation of the research results.
The printing of the monographic publications occurs in the series »Zentraleuropäische Archäologie« (ZEA) at the OeAI.
