RESEARCH ON CELTIC-ROMAN CULTURAL CONTACTS: MAGDALENSBERG (CARINTHIA)

The analysis of the finds of fibulae from the excavation seasons from 1948-2002 at the settlement on the Magdalensberg was carried out in cooperation with the Carinthian Provincial Museum (H. Dolenz). A total of ca. 600 fibulae were entered into a MSAccess Data Bank, and the graphic documentation of the finds, begun by G. Moßler (†), was continued. Together with E. Schindler Kaudelka, the analysis of the find-specific data and the absolute dating was undertaken.
As a result, it has been possible to assign the fibulae to six chronologically relevant groups between 30/20 B.C. and the Claudian period. A cluster analysis should allow conclusions concerning the particularities of the different find groups in the functionally differing areas of the settlement. Particularly close attention will be paid to the workshop finds with their evidence for an independent production of fibulae after the final decade of the 1st century B.C.
